We'd like to blame someone
in the marketing department
for the awkward label
created last year for the
launch of our Navy Strength
Gin, The Broadside. Sadly,
we don't actually have a
marketing department per se
at The West Winds –
there is just the four of
us and we have tended to
rely on our charm and
winning smiles to get us
through. No longer! We got
serious and recruited young
gun designer, Lauren
Bonkowski , to build this
years model which we love,
a lot...
On to the Gin – The
West Winds Gin “The
Broadside” Navy
Strength. Considering the
original navy strength
ratings related to rum,
Gin's lighter version has
certainly come into it's
own recently. We all know
the story behind the term
Navy Strength–at 57%
ABV (114 proof) a Gin's
water content is
sufficiently low that it
can safely be spilled on a
ship’s gunpowder
stocks and they will still
burn but what does it mean
from the consumers' point of
view? In essence, The
Broadside shows intensified
botanical tones and lifted
citrus notes and is a
perfect example of what
high proof spirits can
offer.
Named after one of the most
brazen and aggressive
tactics in naval history,
where warships released a
close range barrage of
firepower from every gun
along one side of the hull,
The West Winds Gin
“The Broadside”
was made using the
beguiling and distinctive
sea parsley and seasoned
with Margaret River sea
salt. We may well have
created the world’s
first salty gin and
certainly the first using
seawater. Utilising umami
and mouth feel taste
sensations, we reckon
it’s up there with
salty caramel and is the
churros of
drinking.
Its as bold and brutish as
the maneuver. We're not
firing single shots here,
and nor should
you.
Originally launched to
celebrate World Gin Day and subsequently recognised with a Double Gold medal at the 2014 New York World Wine & Spirits Competition,
The Broadside joins its
siblings The Sabre and The
Cutlass as a staple of our
distillery. As for drinks
ideas, we say keep it
simple...sip it straight up
on a cold winters evening,
appreciate its
“full-on”
flavour in a dry Martini
with a grapefruit twist or
treat yourself to an
explosive G&T with a
slice of
lemon.
It will hit store shelves
and the nations finest
house's of libation from
June 1, 2015 and, needless
to say, if it ain't at your
local, demand it...nicely
of course...
About The West Winds Gin:
Hailing from Margaret River
and using the pristine rain
water gathered there, The
West Winds Gin has blazed a
path across the world for
Australian gin with
stockists now in countries
such as Canada, Hong Kong,
France, UK and Andorra. The
West Winds Gins are gin
lovers gins, set apart by
utilising native botanicals
like wattle seed and bush
tomato and the pristine
waters of Margaret River in
Western Australia. The West
Winds name is a tribute to
the ocean breezes used for
centuries by sailors to
cross the Indian Ocean from
South Africa to the west
coast of Australia and
beyond in a search for the
riches of the new world.
Inspired by seafarers,
distilled by craftsmen, The
West Winds Gins are
“Damn Fine Gins, from
Australia.”
