Home of The Ramones and The Statue of Liberty, setting for some of the world's great movies - think Taxi Driver, Donnie Brasco, Brewsters Millions, Ghostbusters and who could forget Tom Cruise in Cocktail, New York has always been a leader of the world's great creative forces – food, drink, art, science...you name it.
And so it is with great excitement that we can tell you that our brutish, navy strength offering, The Broadside, has won Gold at the 2015 New York International Spirits Competition this week.
Further, we have been named as Australia's Gin Distillery of the Year.
How do you like them apples?
Up against an armada that would strike fear into the hearts of many a brave seaman, our spicy, seawater driven number, weighing in at 58%, took on all and sundry in a vulgar display of power and shower.
Our Navy Strength Gin was named after the most brazen and aggressive of tactics in naval history. The broadside was a final roll of the dice where a warship would release a close range barrage of firepower from every gun along one side of the hull.
A bit like dropping your last $50 on a trip down to Atlantic City, we are not firing blanks here and nor should you.
This gong adds to an impressive list of accolades for one of the countries most awarded, and arrested, gin producers and sits alongside TWO Double Gold awards from the San Francisco International Spirits Competition and Golds in London and New York last year.
Add that to our domestic bounty and you can see that the new world continues to rise as a source of some of the world's great Gins. What's next for this fleet of miscreants and scoundrels? James Clarke, Flag Furler, Deck Scrubber and Strategist for the West Winds says....
“This is another huge vote of confidence in the West Winds, and affirmation that we must be doing at least a few things right – kudos to Jason and Paul for their work in the distillery and Jez for creating havoc in the marketplace. And we really couldn't have wished for better timing as this award has come just as we are preparing the landing party for our Ginvasion of the US which is due in early 2016. That, along with the looming onslaught that is Christmas, should keep the guys well and truly on the straight and narrow. Time to set sail!”

About the West Winds: Hailing from Margaret River and using the pristine rain water gathered there, The West Winds Gin has blazed a path across the world for Australian gin with stockists now in countries such as Canada, Hong Kong, France, UK and Andorra. The West Winds Gins are gin lovers gins, set apart by utilising native botanicals like wattleseed and bush tomato and the pristine waters of Margaret River in Western Australia. The West Winds name is a tribute to the ocean breezes used for centuries by sailors to cross the Indian Ocean from South Africa to the West Coast of Australia and beyond in a search for the riches of the new world. Inspired by seafarers, distilled by craftsmen, The West Winds Gins are “Damn Fine Gins, from Australia.”
